Taurine For Eye Health

Research-Based Benefits Of Taurine For Eye Health

According to research published in Neural Regeneration Research, taurine plays a critical role in maintaining the health of our retinas. If we don’t get enough of this amino acid, it can lead to a buildup of oxidative stress in the eyes, causing the cells that catch light—the photoreceptors—to break down. Anyone who’s not getting their fill of taurine might be putting themselves at risk for some serious eye issues, maybe even loss of sight. So, what makes taurine such a big deal for keeping our eyes on the prize?

Protects Retinal Cells

Something about taurine everyone should know is that its concentration levels in the retina are higher than in any other tissue in your body–and one of its primary functions is to protect retinal cells. A research article published on PLOS ONE reveals that taurine offers neuroprotection against the degradation of retinal ganglion cells or RGCs and photoreceptors. Over time, the depletion of RGCs and photoreceptors causes vision loss. What causes retinal ganglion cells and photoreceptor cells to degenerate and how does taurine help? Factors like oxidative stress, diabetic retinopathy, and retinal diseases, such as glaucoma, contribute to retinal cell degradation. Being an antioxidant, taurine works as an anti-inflammatory agent in the eye. This means it prevents inflammation caused by glaucoma, a disease characterized by optic nerve damage. The antioxidant properties of taurine also make it an effective stress response component for reducing the impact of oxidative stress, which occurs because of the retina being exposed to excessive visible light and oxygen.

Prevents Visual Fatigue

When you spend extended periods staring at the computer, your eyes get tired. Likewise–working in environments exposed to bright light and oxygen triggers eye strain or visual fatigue. Your eyes may become sore, itchy, watery or dry, and you may experience blurred or double vision. But the good news is, there are many techniques for dealing with chronic work-related pain, including eye strain. For example, you could use low-intensity bulbs or cover windows with blind to reduce light in your workspace. You could also adjust your computer’s display light settings to the right levels and take regular breaks from the screen. However, without taurine, you cannot overcome visual fatigue. Why?

First, continuous exposure of the eyes to bright light and oxygen results in oxidative damage. Second, prolonged visual tasks cause metabolic waste to accumulate in the eyes, resulting in eyestrain. Now, taurine counteracts oxidant acids released in the eye to prevent oxidative stress or damage, which causes the degeneration of retinal cells and photoreceptors. Taurine also helps the retina get rid of metabolic waste and microscopic debris, by supporting the movement of essential nutrients in the eyes. According to the National Library of Medicine, the supplementation of taurine can reduce visual fatigue due to its effectiveness in improving retinal cell or photoreceptor degradation.

Enhanced Night Vision

Can you see clearly at night? If yes, you should be grateful for taurine. Don’t get it wrong. Vitamin A is essential for low-light vision, just as your doctor has told you before. Deficiency in vitamin A causes night blindness. So what is the role of taurine in night vision? Note that one may experience poor night vision because of several factors, like genetic causes, photoreceptor dysfunction, diabetic retinopathy, and other eye conditions. Since taurine protects photoreceptors from damage, it helps keep the cone and rod (components responsible for vision) healthy, thus preventing night blindness. Other conditions like diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and macular degeneration or retinal cell damage can prevent you from seeing properly in dark environments. As discussed above, taurine functions as a neuroprotectant against the degradation of retinal ganglion cells and vision loss in glaucoma. Moreover, taurine prevents toxic injury of retinal cells and reduces oxidative damage to the eye. Overall, taurine combats key factors that contribute to night vision loss.

If you think of important nutrients that support healthy eyes, taurine might not cross your mind. After all, you might have seen the term ‘taurine’ on energy drink labels only. But taurine is an essential nutrient for your eyes than you could ever imagine. As an antioxidant, taurine protects the retina and photoreceptors from degradation, thus improving your eyesight. It’s also effective in combating oxidative stress and eliminating metabolic waste in the eyes. In doing so, taurine reduces visual fatigue. Not to mention, taurine supports night vision by preventing toxic damage of photoreceptors and retinal cells, glaucoma, and other eye disorders.
